Understanding information assymmetry in education for better decision-making

As a young first-year student, I hoped that I would have everything related to my professional and academic future sorted out by the teachers and the university staff. I was naive and wrong. I had to several months trying to learn about master's degrees, professional opportunities, scholarships, and the mechanics of educational pursuit. This taught me how information asymmetry in academic life can determine academic and professional outcomes in unimaginable ways. If I did not reduce it in my case, I would not have been able to:

  • Graduate Top 10 of the 2022 Economics Class with an advanced undergraduate programme and quantitative methods track

  • Be admitted to 3 MSc degrees in Statistics and Mathematics without a STEM background

  • Obtain 4 different scholarships during my academic years

  • Be admitted to the University of Oxford's ML Summer School

  • Be admitted to the MSc in Mathematical Finance at Edinburgh, LSE, and Warwick

Many people think these results come from intellectual ability, luck, or other factors. While those certainly play a role, I can assure you that most of these achievements came from the fact that I knew these opportunities existed and researched how to reach them. It’s all about reducing the information asymmetry between you and your competitors — in your class, your degree, your field, your city, your region, etc. If you have more information than they do, you win.

Just imagine how many people have missed these opportunities or made the wrong decisions simply because they didn’t know something that others did — and used that knowledge well. These posts aim to reduce information asymmetry as much as possible between readers and their competitors. So, take a look and expand your research on these topics to optimise your decision-making process in competitive environments.

Get some help

I try to create content in all my social networks in order to bring students closer to what true counseling and advisory is, because I think that many students need it and it is very hard to find in countries such as Spain and other non-english speaking ones. Nevertheless, I know sometimes students have more concrete needs and this is not enough.

You might need someone to really be with you, helping out. But something you already know is that not many teachers and professionals have the time or the energy to help you out with your doubts related to what degree to choose, how to improve the CV, possible career paths, and others.

However, in my case, education is my real passion, and I am always glad to help anyone that needs someone to take 2 hours of his time to go through CV, doubts and help seeking in the internet or other resources what you could do for your goals. Reserve your spot in Calendly!
